NEN Norm Committee Geo-information 351 240

The NEN Norm Committee Geo-information 351 240 focuses on Dutch NEN standards for geo-information or those related to geo-information; this Committee has been active since the end of the nineties. In 2007 it shifted its focus to European and international normalisation. It has, for example, been decided that, from 2008 onwards, ISO/TC 211 will be actively followed, voted for and, where necessary, commented upon. This is necessary for the International Standards, developed by ISO, as virtually all are adopted as European Standards. This again means that the Dutch Standards have to be adapted accordingly. Therefore it is a good idea to make sure the ISO Standards are compatible with existing Dutch Standards beforehand.

In order to actively deal with the more than 50 European and International Standards, a contact person has been designated for each Standard. He/she studies the Standard and is able to explain at meetings of the Commission, what the Standard is all about and why it is important to the Netherlands. Voting advice can be given then. The secretary of the NEN Norm Committee provides the contact persons with information.

Composition

The composition of the NEN Norm Committee is listed at [1].

Relationship that NEN has with ISO and CEN

NEN is related in two ways to ISO and CEN. First, NEN has a contact person for each ISO and CEN standard who is able to judge it. Second, NEN prepares the meetings held by ISO/TC211 and CEN/TC287. This is all about voting and, for example, who is present at their meetings. A formal recommendation from the NEN Norm Committee is necessary if one wishes to participate in an ISO and CEN meeting.
