3. Installing GAIA and uDig We will now publish a WMS (web Mapping Service) via the geoserver with a simple GIS data-viewer (GAIA).

1) First you install the GAIA software: GAIA 3.0

The installation speaks for itself; default values can be used.

2) Open GAIA 3.0 via the start menu

Close any start up screens which may open (if the right hand side of the screen is black, you should change the windows desktop theme. Click the right mouse button on the desktop, select properties: theme -> windows xp). Via 'tools' and 'add layer' you can make layers visible. At this moment you want to be able to see data as WMS.

3) Go to the tab OGC Services: then select the Add Image:OGC service icon.png symbol to add the OGC service to the list. Give it a recognisable name, the URL refers to the data that is available via Geoserver with the URL and the service type is WMS; click ‘OK’.

http://localhost:8080/geoserver/wms

On the geoserver there is a wide range of geo-data available that can be viewed by selecting one from the left row and adding it via the option 'add layer'. At this moment you have geo data available via GAIA and the geoserver and you have made it visible as WMSs. In the next step you will see how you can view a file that has been installed somewhere else within GAIA.

4) Install uDig with the following installation file: Udig

Default values can be used for the installation. We will use uDig in step 6.
